Spring has officially sprung, and so has the UK and Ireland film industry. Let’s take a look at these exciting projects currently filming over the next few months.
2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for film and television in the UK. Awards season is behind us, and we look forward to blockbuster season and a huge summer of releases. But first, we wander around the British and Emerald Isles to uncover some of the most exciting productions currently shooting.
‘Horseface’
From The Mighty Boosh to The Great British Bake Off, Noel Fielding’s next project involves him taking on the role of Dick Turpin, Britain’s most famous highwayman. While taking on the lead role, Fielding is also credited as script supervisor in this new series and will be directed by The Inbetweeners Movie director, Ben Palmer. Horseface (working title) is currently filming in London and is expected to release on AppleTV+ in 2024.
‘Scoop’
Scoop is the dramatisation of the famous 2019 BBC Two Newsnight interview between journalist Emily Mailist and Prince Andrew, where his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein gets discussed at great lengths. After the cast announcement in February this year, filming kicked off in London this month, and the film is scheduled for release on Netflix in 2024. The cast includes Gillian Anderson as Mailist, Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, and other names such as Billie Piper, Keeley Hawes and Connor Swindells.
‘The Gorge’
Doctor Strange director, Scott Derrickson, brings this genre-bending love story to the big screen, starring Hollywood royalty Anya Taylor-Joy, Miles Teller and Sigourney Weaver. Currently shooting in London and expected to release on AppleTV+ at the start of next year, The Gorge follows two young lovers who juggle their relationship and lethal surroundings.
‘One of Us’
Filming throughout March and April in Belfast is One of Us, a horror mystery about a family who simultaneously die one by one whilst attending a funeral. Heartstopper star and Spotlight member Kit Connor leads the cast, supported by Douglas Henshall, Sienna Guillory and Charlotte Hope.
‘Ghostbusters: Hell’s Kitchen’
Following on from the hugely successful Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) is Ghostbusters: Hell’s Kitchen. Although details on the plot are being kept under wraps for the time being, we know from the post-credit scene of its predecessor that the ECTO-1 and its crew of ghost-catching heroes will be returning to New York City to the famous Ghostbusters HQ. Ghostbusters: Hell’s Kitchen is currently filming at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, and stars Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and Celeste O’Connor and is directed by Gil Kenan.
‘Belgravia: The Next Chapter’
Julien Fellows’ follow-up to Downton Abbey was the period drama Belgravia (2020) starring Spotlight members Philip Glenister, Tamsin Greig and Ella Purnell. Currently filming in London is the sequel series. Set 25 years after the first season, Belgravia: The Next Chapter follows the social elite of 19th-century London.
Spotlight casting director Sarah Trevis has recruited a group of exciting performers including Sophie Winkleman, Sophie Thompson, Toby Regbo, Elaine Cassidy and Edward Bluemel. Director John Alexander is returning to Belgravia for the second season, which is currently scheduled for a Christmas release.
‘Andor’
Star Wars fans around the world will be excited to hear that Andor season two is being filmed at Pinewood Studios – just north of London – as we speak. Diego Luna returns as titular Cassian Andor for more rebellious missions. Luna will be supported once again by Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgård, Denise Gough and Genevieve O’Reilly.
Andor season two is scheduled for release towards the end of 2024, while Lucasfilm is keeping the plot top secret for now.
‘The Young Offenders’
Returning for season four of the popular BBC Three comedy coming-of-age drama, The Young Offenders, are Alex Murphy, Chris Walley, Hilary Rose and Dominic MacHale. The Young Offenders is currently filming in and around Cork, Ireland and is scheduled for release in 2024.
As well as all these exciting new projects, several films and television shows continue production around the UK for the next few months. The Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, directed by Sam Taylor, is still in production and shooting in Camden, London. BAFTA-nominated Netflix drama, The Crown, continues production in and around London for the final season, where we will be introduced to the budding romance between Kate Middleton and Prince William. And for all the period drama fans out there, Bridgerton season three is still in production in the Surrey region for the rest of this month.
